Mentor – Bob Keillor
Grant Keenan is Managing Director of Keenan Recycling which he set up ten years ago and has been latterly joined by his brother and father making it into a truly family run business. He went to a “brilliant” talk given by Bob Keillor, Chief Executive Officer of Wood Group PSN and followed his progress and realised he was someone he would click with as a mentor. When he contacted Business Mentoring Scotland and outlined what he was looking for they got to work and were able to team him up with Bob Keillor.
Bob, who has mentored for many years as well as being a very successful businessman in his own right, was intrigued by the company and keen to help an entrepreneurial-led Aberdeen based company, and they hit it off immediately.
Grant had a clear idea of where he wanted the company to go but without a specific agenda or strategy, he realised they were a long way off hitting their full potential. When an opportunity arose to expand out with the Aberdeen area to Inverness he realised this was the next step. Bob helped him realise that they needed to establish their capability and have a viable business model before investing in the plant and staff on location. They needed to think about cash flow, funding, resources and the risk factor before they could move forward and not just wait for things to happen. Most important was to be ahead of the game. Grant recognised that one of the most valuable lessons Bob taught him was “the importance of getting culture and core values right for the business,” to enable him to expand smoothly and successfully into Inverness and to keep growing the business with successful management of the workforce.
Another positive that Grant brought from the meetings was being introduced to the Entrepreneurial Exchange which has been an “inspirational and invaluable addition” to his business life. Grant has also begun mentoring others himself as he sees it as a “what goes around, comes around” scenario.
Bob enjoys helping local businesses through talks and “time sharing experiences” and has particularly enjoyed working with “a business with a good state of health.”
