Alison Welsh is the Business Development Director for Square Circle found out about the Business Mentoring program through their Chamber of Commerce membership: “We had a Business Mentor to help us with the start up of the business on the operational side and we still have contact with him but then felt that we needed help with the Business Development and growth side of the business.” They “gelled” with David McConachie, a Sales and Marketing Director with 4 years Business mentoring experience behind him.

Alison explained that they discussed what Square Circle were currently are doing and what they had in mind for the future, David explained “Alison and her team communicated their growth strategy well, and I questioned whether the same messages were getting to her target market and what were potential clients expecting from them. They had to truly understand their target and translate their expertise to it.” David was concerned that a lot of companies looking for growth go out to attract as many customers as possible rather than targeting the right match. Alison agreed that “David established that we were doing good things but were not very structured, and gave guidance on a more structured approach and follow up with potential clients. He recommended an online tool to use to send out information and follow up with potential customers as well as tracking conversion rates. Essentially he has assiated us develop a platform from which we can grow the business.” David also emphasised the “importance of recommendation and recognition through effective and innovative P.R,” which was more efficient and cost effective than targeting a massive market.

Alison said: “We have ended up with a more structured process, including taking on a new employee to drive forward our marketing. It is a slow burn initially but we are starting to see the effect and have lot more potential opportunities, people have started to contact us directly so has made a difference to the organisation already – in a few months we will hope to see a knock on effect on our turnover and hence on profitability. I would recommend Business Mentoring to anyone.” David enthused that he “really enjoyed it, my task is to give advice and be a sounding board and we had a good relationship and worked really well together. I have been fortunate enough to have worked in a range of companies for many years and have had the benefit of excellent Chairmen who have advised and guided me and I hope I can now do the same.” David’s also emphasised that “the skills and personality match is essential to make the mentoring process work”.
